Frequently Asked Questions
Why Michigan?
Madeleine spent every summer growing up visiting her family’s home on Lake Huron on the Canadian side. Some summers included a detour to Mackinac Island for fudge, bike rides and sometimes tea at The Grand Hotel because her mom had visited frequently as a child, “‘cuz she’s a Michigan girl.” Patrick’s yearly Darmody Family Reunion chose Northern Michigan as a destination in 1993, with a day trip to Mackinac Island, of which Patrick remembers very little. If you pry him for details he’ll say, “I was three!!!” Nonetheless, as soon as you step foot on the island, you’ll know what a special place Mackinac Island (and The Grand Hotel) is. We can’t wait to share “America’s Summer Place” with you!
How do you pronounce Mackinac?
Though there is a “C” on the end, Mackinac is pronounced “Mackinaw.”
How do you recommend I get to Mackinac Island?
We know traveling to somewhere so remote can be challenging so THANK YOU for coming to be a part of our special day. You can find extensive travel details including which airports to fly into, which ferry to take and where to stay on the Island on our travel page. If you have any questions please email us at thedarmodys@getthemtothegrand.com.
Are children allowed at the wedding or reception?
In order to allow all guests, including parents, a day of relaxation we have chosen for our wedding day to be an adult-only occasion. We hope this advance notice means you are still able to share our big day and will enjoy having the day off!
What is the dress code?
We ask that you adhere to a Black Tie Optional dress code for our ceremony and reception.
If you choose to stay at The Grand Hotel, please also note the hotel has a dress code of their own for all patrons, as noted below:
During the day, casual resort clothing is appropriate. Prior to 6:30 PM, please no midriff-baring tops, sweatpants, or cut-off shorts for ladies. For gentlemen, no sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, or cut-off shorts.
After 6:30 PM in main areas of the hotel dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters, and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentlemen are required to wear a suit or sport coat, necktie, and dress pants (no denim or shorts).
I have accessibility requirements, what accommodations are available?
Mackinac Island is a car-free island, however horse-drawn carriages can be called (like a taxi) through a main line to take you anywhere you may need to go. Both our ceremony and reception are wheelchair accessible. If other accommodations are needed, please email us at thedarmodys@getthemtothegrand.com.
What is the RSVP deadline?
Our RSVP deadline will be mentioned on our formal invitations and updated here once those have been sent out.
